Long Time Coming
by Jules

Nick felt the train jerk, causing him to look up from his sketch pad. He'd been drawing for about an hour, trying to pass the time of his 6 hour train ride. Normally, he would have driven his car home from college for the holidays, but the week before he had been rear ended pretty badly and forced into the bumper of the vehicle in front of him. Normally, it wouldn't have caused enough damage to turn the front half of his car into an accordion, but the vehicle in front had been a bus, and the car behind him had been doing about 80. The good part of it all was that he hadn't been hurt. It was miraculous actually, and Nick couldn't exactly complain when the driver that had hit him offered to buy him a new car. The lone thought that had passed through his mind at that offer was that it must be nice to have that much money.

Nick's parents had suggested that he take the train home and buy a car there. It was an odd request, but they had been adamant that he do that so he could go to the dealership of a family friend and then drive the car back in January when classes started up again. He had taken the number of the man paying for the car and all the dealer had to do was phone him and he would finance the car so that Nick wouldn't have to pay a cent. Grudgingly, Nick agreed to take the excruciatingly long train ride home. He wondered who really went by train anymore. Flying was so much quicker. Not that he really liked heights. He didn't. But 6 hours on a train really sucked.

Nick flexed his fingers and stretched, wanting to get the kinks out of his muscles. He was shocked when he noticed a pair of vibrant green eyes watching him. Intensely. Very intensely. Nick couldn't help but blush, feeling a reaction in his groin at how beautiful this man was. He looked out the window, catching the man's reflection. He had looked away as well, and Nick couldn't help thinking that he looked familiar. Nick looked back, smiling as their eyes met. He knew him from somewhere, he had to, but his brain just couldn't function enough to know from where.

"You really get lost in it don't you?" The man asked, his voice soft. Nick blushed again, nodding his head. "You didn't even notice me sit down. I had to move your bag.."

Nick saw the bag that the man was referring to sitting on the seat beside him now. He had picked a 4 person cubicle and Nick had occupied all four seats. "No problem, sorry about that." Nick then realized that the car was only a quarter full and there were plenty of other seats to sit in. That knowledge didn't bother him one bit, especially if it meant him getting to sit with this beautiful man. "Sometimes I zone out and anything can be going on around me and I won't notice."

"You always did go into another world when you were drawing."

That caught Nick's attention and he furrowed his eyebrows, looking at the man closer. He must know him, he just couldn't picture from where. The man must have sensed this because he smiled knowingly, "Kevin. Kevin Richardson. Justin's brother."

At that, Nick felt the air whoosh out of his lungs and his heart nearly stop. To be honest, he wasn't *really* Justin's brother because Justin had been an only child when his parents split up. That had been when Justin was 5. While both of his parents remarried, Justin's mom had met and married Kevin's dad and thus a family

had been created. Justin's step father had two sons, Kevin had been the oldest of the two, 10 years older than him, and instantly they'd accepted the younger boy into their family as one of their own. Nick took another look and realized that this gorgeous created before him WAS Justin's big brother Kevin. Nick was shocked that Kevin had recognized him after all these years. Kevin had left home after college at age 24. Nick had been 15, Justin 14. That had been 7 years ago. NIck hadn't seen him since.

"Wow. It's been a while Kevin. How did you recognize me?"

"I see Justin whenever I'm in town, plus we keep in contact through e-mail and stuff. He shows me pictures, tells me what everyone's been up to. Besides, you haven't changed a bit Nicky."

Nick felt his stomach drop at that. He'd been an annoying, cocky little shit back then, him and Justin always annoying the shit out of Kevin and his friends. He knew what Kevin had thought of him back then and hated to think that he still did think of him like that. "I'm not the annoying little shit I used to be." Both men laughed and Kevin shook his head.

"No. What I mean is that you're still the stunning blonde golden boy you used to be. That Carter smirk is probably still breaking hearts."

Both men blushed at Kevin's admission, Nick's grin getting wider. He'd known even at 14 that he'd had an impossible crush on the older man. It was something he'd never told anyone, even Justin when he'd come out to him on the days between his 17th and Justin's 16th birthday. His crush on Kevin had been his secret, something that even after all of these years had yet to go away.

Nick wondered if Justin had told Kevin he was gay. he figured not, because as much of a gossip as his best friend was, he knew when to keep a secret, when it was *really* important. But now, sitting face to face with the older man seeing the gleam in his eyes. Nick wished that Kevin knew, just to make things easier. How that would make things easier, Nick wasn't sure, but it would.

"Can I see?" Kevin asked, nodding at the sketch pad on his lap. Nick hesitated for a few moments before nodding, cautiously handing the pad over. Usually no one was allowed to see his sacred, private sketch pad. But Kevin wasn't just anyone. He was the inspiration behind most of the sketches, and if Nick was honest with himself he knew he couldn't deny this man anything. Even during Nick's two year long relationship with Lance, Kevin had been the reason Nick continued to draw. And when they had broken up months before, Nick's focus had never wavered. He just didn't tell Kevin that. He didn't want to frighten him away.

"They're beautiful Nick." Kevin's voice was a whisper, his eyes wide. Nick held his breath with each page that was flipped over, knowing that eventually Kevin would get to it.

That picture.

The one that Nick could never get out of his mind.

The one of Kevin. There were actually many drawings Nick had done of Kevin, but there was one that was special. That sat out above the others.

He and Justin had been camping in the back yard one night, mid July. Nick had gone inside to use the bathroom and crept past Kevin's room, looking inside. What he'd seen was Kevin asleep on his stomach, back bare and sheets around his waist. His face had been purely angelic and it had taken Nick's breath away. The moment he had returned to the tent he'd started to work on it, oblivious to Justin's teasing. Nick had about a dozen copies of that particular drawing and still, to this day he could sketch it in frighteningly accurate detail, the memory that vivid in his mind, still. After all these years.

Nick heard a gasp and knew Kevin had come across it. He watched as Kevin's fingers danced over the paper slowly. A look of awe on his face. "Wow."

Nick remained silent. He had no idea what to say.

"Summer of 94. You and Jus had that camp out in the backyard. It was about ..." Kevin closed his eyes to think and Nick's jaw dropped open. "...2:30 in the morning."

Their eyes met and heat crackled between them. Nick found himself lost in Kevin's voice, unable to believe that he could have even known about it. He'd been sleeping. At least Nick thought he'd been sleeping.

"You had come in to use the bathroom. Stood outside my door for about 20 minutes, just watching me. It was like you were in a trance."

"I was," Nick whispered, cheeks hot.

"What were you thinking about? You looked so... confused."

"I was ... I ..." Nick's voice trembled, his hands shook.

Kevin saw Nick's shyness and smiled. "You looked like an angel standing there. Bathed in light. There was the light from the hall, but you also stood in the light from the window. I didn't know it was possible for someone to be so beautiful until that exact minute." Nick's breath caught in his throat as his heart sped up.

"Huh?"

Kevin nodded. "It's true. It was so wrong, but all I could think of was you. The two of you in the pool earlier that day. You at dinner eating those hamburgers. The way your tongue would lick the ketchup from your lips. The smile on your faces when Lynne said you two could sleep out in the tent that night. It was like God was teasing me. Tempting me with what I couldn't have."

Nick watched Kevin blush, his own cheeks getting warm. He couldn't believe his ears. Finally, he found his voice "I thought you were asleep... I just wanted to watch you for a bit. You were just so ...beautiful and I didn't know what it was but I just couldn't help myself. I wanted to..."

Kevin's eyes were warm, encouraging him to continue with his confession. Nick realized how much he needed to get this off of his chest. "Wanted to what?"

"Wanted to touch you. Feel your skin to see how soft it was. I wanted to crawl in beside you and curl up with you." Nick couldn't believe that he was sitting on a train headed for Tampa with this man. Kevin Richardson. Telling him everything he'd kept locked inside his heart for 8 years. Furthermore, he couldn't believe the fact that Kevin wasn't freaked out about it. In fact, he looked pleased. And relieved.

"I didn't know what it was..." Nick took a deep breath. "...but you made me feel so much."

Kevin nodded. He ran his hand through his hair and exhaled loudly. "Wow."

"Yeah."

"This was definitely not the ride I was expecting home. Usually, when I've had to take the train it's been boring ...but ..." He paused to smile. "... not this time."

"I usually drive, but had to take the train. I missed the earlier one by like 5 minutes." It had to have been fate. Justin had phoned just as he had been leaving his house, saying that he's pick him up when he got in. Nick was supposed to call him when they were 20 minutes out of Tampa. That one phone call was what had made him late, and thus on Kevin's train. Nick watched Kevin nod as he continued to look through the book. Neither said anything until Kevin was finished and closed it. He raised his head to look at Nick.

"Nick?"

"Yeah?"

"Half of these drawings..." Kevin looked down at the book and then back up, his face unreadable. He locked his lips slowly and tucked a strand of his shoulder length hair behind his ear. Nick held back a groan at the movement. "...they're.."

"Of you. I know." And it was true. Nick had gotten the book from Justin on his 13th birthday and only used it on special occasions. In 9 years he had filled maybe three quarters of it, and half of that was of Kevin.

"Has anyone else seen them? The drawings?"

"You."

"And that's it?"

Nick nodded, trembling. He was lost in the depths of Kevin's gaze.

"Justin's never said anything..."

"He doesn't know." Nick interrupted softly. Kevin's face registered shock.

"He doesn't know? At all?" He found that hard to believe. He knew that Justin and Nick told each other everything. They were total confidants. It was something Justin had told him a long time ago. That Nick was the only person that knew everything about him and vice versa. So for Justin not to know about Nick's sexual orientation was shocking, as the dates on many of the drawings ranged from 1994 to present.

"He knows I'm gay." There, he'd said it. Kevin barely flinched, but he'd admitted vocally to the older man he

was gay. "He just doesn't know about you."

"What .... what about me?" Nick was thankful that they were practically the only ones on the car.

"That I drew you. Still draw you..." Nick blushed. "That I have this infatuation with you that I still, after 8 years, can't explain."

"Wow."

"What?"

"It's good to know it's not just me then."

Nick's jaw dropped, his breathing hitched. "Not just you? What?"

"That's been harbouring these feelings for 8 years. Back then I told myself that I was crazy. That I'd been imagining your lingering gazes, or the fascination in your eyes. And it wasn't like ... big brother fascination. It was a sexual gaze, at least I'd hoped it was. But you were so young and I wasn't going to take advantage of that. I couldn't. It wouldn't have been right."

Nick was floored. "Does Justin know?" He was shocked even further when Kevin nodded.

"He found out at Thanksgiving." Kevin then rencountered the tale of Justin finding pictures in his old room of Nick that he'd thought he'd lost years ago. He hadn't even imagined that Kevin had been taking them and hiding them in his desk.

"He didn't say a word."

"I asked him not to. I didn't want to seem pathetic..."

Nick smiled as he shook his head. "You are a lot of things Kevin, but pathetic is not one of them."

Now the question in the air was that of what was to happen next. Nick was almost afraid to ask. Kevin handed him back his sketch pad and both men trembled as their fingers grazed one another. "Are you... with anyone right now?" Nick held his breath, afraid of the response. He felt overwhelming relief when Kevin shook his head no.

"It's been about a year since my last relationship You?"

"No. Very much single."

Both men grinned. "Maybe you wanna..." Kevin left the question in the air. Nick moaned softly as Kevin bit his lip nervously.

"Yeah. I wanna." Those three words filled him with a giddiness that he hadn't experienced in a long time, and silently Nick cheered the accident that forced him to take the train. The two men sat comfortably in their seats, staring at one another.

Finally, the conductor's voice could be heard throughout the train.

"We will be arriving at Tampa Station in 30 minutes."

Nick pulled out his cell phone and dialed his best friend's number.

"Yo. This is Justin."

"J. It's Nick. This is your 30 minute warning. The train's almost in and you better be there when we arrive. I'm not waiting for your ass." Nick smiled at the laugh that Kevin tried to hide. They were both aware of Justin's inability to be anywhere on time. Ever.

"Nicky. Cool. I got ya covered bro, leavin now!" Nick heard Justin tell the people he was with that he had to leave. "So, how was the ride."

Nick looked at Kevin and grinned. "Awesome bro, awesome."

"So, you with Kev then?" Nick heard the smile in his best friend's voice and knew that the phone call earlier had been planned. Kevin, coincidentally lived in the next city over, and Justin must have known what train he'd be on. Nick made a note to thank the younger man profusely when they got in.

"Yeah. He's here."

"Not what I asked you." Justin argued and Nick could practically SEE the grin on Justin's face. "Are you WITH him though?"

Nick giggled and covered his face with his hand. "We're gonna see J." Peeking his eyes out through his fingers, Nick's eyes met Kevin's. There was a mirroring look of lust and heat emanating from their green depths. His leg rested against Kevin's in the space between the seats. "How did you know?" Nick knew Justin would know what he was asking. Not how he knew about Kevin's attraction, but his own.

"I'm your best friend Nick. I know shit like this. You do know that you could have said something to me about it... but the best part is that you graduate in the spring. You'll be looking to get out of that crap town you decided to get your degree in and will be moving out somewhere... so..."

Nick laughed. "Move fast much?"

"I'm serious Nick. You two are perfect for each other. You're gonna be great together.. don't you think?"

"I don't know J, but it's looking pretty good at this point."
