It Was You

"Howie? Can I talk to you for a second?" Howie heard Nick from behind him and he looked up from his laptop, recognizing the tone in the younger man's voice. Howie smiled at him and flipped the screen down, wanting to give Nick his undivided attention.
"Sure Kaos. What's bothering you?"

Nick sighed, he didn't know how to bring this up with Howie. He didn't know how to ask his question, without him sounding like a complete loser. "I... I don't know how to ask you this D?" He watched Howie stretch out and lean back, a signal that he would let him take as long as he needed to get whatever was bothering him off his chest. This was something that happened quite frequently lately. Now that they were off from touring, and everyone had gone their separate ways for a while, Nick had taken to hanging out in Orlando with Howie, and they had formed a close bond with one another. Howie provided Nick with the calm and more mature guidance that he needed, where Nick reciprocated with a wilder and more exciting lifestyle than Howie allowed himself. The friends complimented each other's personalities, making them closer in the past few months than they had been in the past 8 years of their friendship.

"What's bothering you Nick? You know you can talk to me about anything." Howie said softly, wanting to relax Nick enough so that he would feel comfortable enough to tell him what was bothering him.

"It's just..." Nick sighed and sat down on the couch beside Howie, curling up against him, resting his head on Howie's broad chest.

Howie smiled and started to run his fingers through Nick's blonde spikes, knowing how much his friend loved the feeling of someone massaging his scalp. "It's just what Nicky?"

"What's it like... You know.. To go on a real date?" Nick slowly raised his eyes to meet Howie's, frowning when he saw the humour there. "What's so funny Howie? You're laughing at me."

"I'm not laughing Nick. It's just... Why are you asking me this? You've been on dates before." Howie laughed, pushing Nick off of him and turning to face him. "I thought that you were being serious here."

Howie failed to see the hurt in Nick's eyes, the sadness on his face as he began to work on his computer again, doing the accounting for his nightclub.

"No.. No I haven't. I've taken girls to publicity parties, awards shows and other business events. But I've never went on a date. A real date. A pick them up at their door with flowers and candies. Go to dinner and then a movie, followed by a romantic walk on the boardwalk or in the park all the while you're filled with this nervous tension wondering if they really think you're funny or they're laughing because they don't want to be rude. All of this, ending with a nice romantic kiss and a promise that we'll do it again some time. THAT'S what I want. Not having our publicist call whoever's hot at the moment and arranging a date for appearances. But that's okay D. If you're busy, I understand. It was stupid anyways. I mean, fuck. I'm 21 fucking years old and have never been on a date before... It's a lost cause anyway." Nick got up and tried to hide the emotion in his voice, not wanting Howie to know just how upset about this he was. He wiped his eyes tiredly and gave the older man a weak smile. "I'm.. I' m gonna go to bed now. Been a long day."

Howie sat on the couch in shock. He had thought Nick was being overly dramatic, just screwing around with him on purpose but never thinking that perhaps he was serious. "Nick... I'm sorry..." He called hoping Nick would turn around and come back to sit down with him. He was relieved when Nick did just that, re-joining him on the couch, this time farther away. "I thought you were fucking with me... Because..."

"Because why D?"

"It's not important Nick. What brought this on all of a sudden?" Howie asked, placing a sympathetic hand on Nick's arm, wanting to take the focus off of himself. He knew by the sadness in Nick's eyes, the desperation in his features, that this was something that was truly bothering him.

"It's just that... I'm tired of not having anyone. Of having such an abnormal life that I can't even do something simple like going on a date. And I know... Well I figured I'd ask you. You could tell me what a real date is like and at least I'd know. Ya know." Blue eyes met brown and both men smiled, leaning back onto the couch to get comfortable.
Nick propped his legs up on the coffee table, and Howie moved his laptop, mirroring Nick's relaxed position.

"It's the best and worst feeling all balled up into one Nick. I can't describe it. I mean.. You're so nervous, but it's a great nervous. Everything's so new and you're learning about them that it is so exciting. But it can be awful too. It all depends on who you're with and what you're doing. How comfortable you are with them."

"Do you prefer dates with people you don't know or people that you do know? Like friends?" Nick asked, afraid that Howie would think that his question was stupid, childish.

"Honestly? It's not that easy. I mean, with a friend you're comfortable to be who you are. They already know you so you're not trying to impress them, but with someone new it's a way to get a fresh start. They don't know everything about you, and they haven't seen you at your worst. Know what I mean?" Howie smiled at the look of concentration on Nick's face. He felt sorry for the youth that Nick never got to waste. It was taken from him so early, and the things that he should have experienced were lost to him.

"Hey... What are you doing Friday night Nick?" He asked, hoping the nervousness in his voice wasn't obvious.

"Probably nothing. Why? Wanna do something?"

"Yeah. I was thinking we'd go out to Vinnie's for some pasta or pizza, and then go to a show or something. We haven't done that in the longest time." Howie smiled when Nick's eyes lit up.

"Yeah.. I haven't been to Vinnies in forever. They make the best fucking pizza man. Okay.. Yeah." At the mention of his favourite restaurant, their conversation was instantly forgotten and plans for Friday were foremost in Nick's mind. "Aren't you supposed to be at the club during the day. Working and shit?"

"Yeah. Come and pick me up at the club.. Like 6 o'clock. By then I'll be ready to get the hell out of there. How does that sound?"

"Amazing D. Thanks." Nick leaned over and hugged Howie tightly. "For everything tonight. Sorry for being such an emotional basket case tonight."

"Don't worry about it Nick." Howie said, hoping that Nick hadn't noticed how much his touch affected him. He moved slightly so his hips were safely away from Nick's leg which was getting closer as he moved to stand up and head up to bed. The last thing Howie wanted, was to freak Nick out when he was already in a very emotional state. Having the younger man know how attracted he was to him would not be very wise right now, especially when Howie had just asked him out on a quasi-date.

Friday night came too soon for Howie and not soon enough for Nick. Both men were oddly nervous about their dinner and movies planned, but neither were entirely sure as to why. Howie knew that Nick just thought that they were hanging out, so he didn't know why he should be nervous. They'd done this so many times before, and it wasn't a big deal. Nick on the other hand changed 4 times before deciding on the first outfit he'd put on an hour earlier. He took extra time to get his hair styled perfectly, the look just right. It was just Howie, so he didn't know why it mattered so much, but for some reason it did.

Nick showed up at Tabu at 6pm, his palms sweating and his heart racing. "Damn.. What's wrong with me? It's just Howie." He asked himself as he approached the front door, walking in as he found it open. "HOWIE... I'M HERE." He called out, letting him know he was there.

"Just a second Nick.. Just got to put this stuff away." Howie called from behind the bar. Nick smiled and sat down, taking in the sight around him. He loved how quiet the bar was when no one was there, and then seeing it completely packed with people just amazed him. How it was so peaceful one minute and excruciating loud the next. Just like each stadium they played in.

"Okay.. I'm ready." Howie said standing up, pausing when he saw what Nick was dressed in. Both men silently admired the other, anxious to see what the night would bring.

They arrived at Vinnie's and Howie gave the hostess his name for the reservation. She led them to a secluded area of the restaurant and sat them down, telling them that their server would be with them in a few moments. The restaurant was half full, a faint glow created by the candles decorating each table and music playing softly enough to create a very romantic ambiance. "I've always loved this place." Nick said softly, looking around and picking up his menu.

"Me too. It's different though. Without all the guys. We usually just book the VIP lounge and it's a zoo back

there." Both men laughed at memories past, the fun they had the last time visiting the restaurant. "I think I like it better like this. Just us. Don't you?" Nick looked directly into Howie's eyes, smiling before averting his eyes to his plate. He couldn't explain what he was feeling at that moment. It was like nothing he'd ever experienced, and if it wasn't Howie sitting across the table from him he would have been scared, unsure. But it was his best friend and he knew that whatever was happening, was going to be okay.

"Yeah Nicky. I definitely do." Howie reached his hand across the table and covered Nick's with it, squeezing slightly before pulling it back and picking up his own menu, hands trembling.

Dinner was the best that either had experienced in as long as they both could remember. They'd both ordered something different and shared, tasting each other's plates. They finished the meal with an espresso and Italian pastries, leaving only after they were both complaining about how much they'd eaten. They then made their way to the theatre, choosing a movie that had started only 10 minutes earlier so they could walk into the theatre without anyone paying attention to them. Howie led Nick to the back row, picking the darkest area of the theatre. Knowing that if anyone recognized them, their quiet night would be lost and the bubble would be broken. About halfway through the movie, Howie was startled when he felt Nick's fingers lace with his own. He slowly turned his head to see Nick slouching down in his seat, trying to get comfortable in the too small seats. Nick smiled and rested his head on Howie's shoulder, like he'd done so many times before while they'd watch movies curled up on the couch. Nick w as someone who craved affection, loved attention, and Howie was more than obliged to provide that to him. "Is this okay D?" Nick whispered, his eyes wide and a hint of fear of rejection could be seen in them.

"Yeah Nicky. It's more than alright." Howie held Nick's hand tighter, letting him know that he didn't want him to go anywhere.

And they spent the rest of the movie like that. Holding hands, with Nick's head on Howie's shoulder, both men oblivious to the world around them. They waited until they were the last people in the theatre before leaving, again wanting to avoid the rush of people exiting the movie. They engaged in small talk, passing the time and both attempting to push their anxious feelings away, not wanting to make more of the evening than it was. Which was two guys going to dinner and a movie. As friends. Just friends. Friends who hold hands. And stare into each others' eyes with feelings they couldn't quite explain. But friends. Various times in the night both Howie and Nick had to remind themselves of that because it's what it was. Friends hanging out. Right.

"So ya wanna go to the boardwalk? See the boats and lights of the city?" Howie asked, nodding towards the water seeing Nick's eyes light up once again.

"You don't mind? I know it's boring for you." Nick's voice was soft, tentative as he was trying to figure everything out. The evening was so familiar to him that it was eerie. It was such a new experience, but there was a sense of familiarity that he couldn't shake. Nick led the way to the end of the pier, sitting down on one of the benches and waiting for Howie to do the same.
"This has been such a beautiful night." Nick said suddenly, breaking the silence that had overtaken them.

"It has. Thank you." Nick could hear the smile in Howie's voice without even having to look at him. He could picture the way the older man's eyes were crinkled up at the corners, the way his lips stretched around his perfect teeth, and the way his skin would glow whenever he was truly happy. Nick could see that without even having to turn around, and he was hit with a sense of completion. Peace.

"You know what Howie?"

"What Nick."

"I'd always pictured what my first real date would be like. How perfect it would be, how I would feel, what we would do. I'd always imagined it and had it played out in my head. And tonight, tonight I've been feeling like I've done this before, like I'm in a time loop and this is just...."

"Like deja vu?" Howie's heart began to race and he wasn't sure where Nick was going with this. He was very nervous all of a sudden and he dared to hope that Nick was feeling what he was feeling.

"Yeah. But in my dream, in the fantasy I could never get a clear picture of their face. I tried so hard to see who it was that I was with, but it was always so fuzzy. I just realized.. Right now that I was looking too hard. Trying to see what I thought was there, instead of seeing what was really there. Does that make sense?" Nick waited for Howie to give him a shaky nod and he continued. "I was trying to put the pieces together but they wouldn't fit. But now it's so clear. I can see the other person."

Howie took a deep breath, with it gaining a new sense of confidence. He leaned in and took Nick's face in his hands, turning his head so they were face to face. "Who is it Nicky?" His voice was barely a whisper, and Nick could hear a slight tremble there.

"It was you." Three words. Those three words made Howie's heart soar. He gave Nick a small smile before

Nick's lips descended upon his, covering his mouth sweetly.

"It was you." Nick repeated as the kiss broke and he took Howie into his arms understanding finally, what the feelings he'd had all night meant.

"Can... Can we do this again some time?" Howie asked, unable to keep the tremble from his voice.

Nick smiled, running his fingers through Howie's curls, tracing his lower lip with the pad of his thumb. "Any time you'd like."
